Tooth Extraction

Why Might Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

Although permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why it may be necessary:

  • There may be serious tooth decay-causing it to be unrestorable and no longer functional.
  • There may be gum disease resulting in compromised support for the tooth.
  • There may be a fracture that extends below the gum line which cannot be repaired.
  • Teeth may be removed for orthodontic purposes.
  • Teeth may adversely affect other teeth or pose a feisty infection (WISDOM TEETH)

Why Might Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted?

Your wisdom teeth are typically the last teeth to develop. Located in the very back corners of the mouth, they usually develop between the ages of 17-24, although some people never develop them. For the majority of us, however, wisdom teeth will grow in and cause problems.

Sometimes there is not enough room to accommodate the wisdom teeth, which impedes their ability to erupt into the mouth correctly. In some cases, the wisdom teeth will partially emerge through the gums, which can result in cavities, crowding, or gum infections. Wisdom teeth will often develop diagonally and horizontally, causing significant problems. This uneven development may be responsible for a myriad of oral health problems, which include teeth crowding and damage to the adjacent second molars.

When there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to erupt at all, they can cause pain in the gums and bone as they shift. This is known as ‘Impacted Wisdom Teeth.’ When your wisdom teeth are impacted, the opening around the teeth may become a fertile ground for bacteria to start developing and may lead to infection in the gum tissues. As a result of this infection, you may experience discomfort, swelling, pain, and illness. The early removal of impacted wisdom teeth is often recommended to avoid future problems and to avoid costly surgical procedures.

Diagnosing Your Treatment with Complete Dental Exams

Our Dentists will complete a thorough examination of your mouth, including x-rays, that will help diagnose the type of wisdom teeth removal you require. Regular dental exams also help you keep your gums and teeth healthy, allowing us to identify any potential concerns to prevent costly dental procedures down the road.

If your wisdom teeth are aligned properly, and the surrounding gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not always have to be removed. With our clinical exam and panoramic imaging, we can inform you if you or your child’s wisdom teeth require extraction.

We Use Sedation Dentistry for Wisdom Teeth Extraction!

Our dentists use Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation) to help you during your Wisdom Teeth Extraction procedure. The sedative is injected directly into your bloodstream, which will increase your comfort level and provide you with a deeper level of sedation, putting you into a deep and comfortable sleep. This sedative works very quickly, and the patient is continually monitored by the dentist during the procedure. The best part is that you will not even be aware during the procedure, alleviating anxiety and stress and minimizing pain.
