Dental Hygiene Therapy

Why are Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments Important?

The start of any dental treatment plan begins with a thorough examination by one of our dentists. Your examination will include an oral cancer screening and a detailed evaluation of the current oral health, including your teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissue.  At North Main Family Dental, we use digital x-rays, periodontal probing, and intra-oral photography to determine your current dental health and provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that is prioritized to best treat any existing conditions based on our findings.

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene Appointment?

When you visit North Main Family Dental, there is a lot to accomplish during a regular dental hygiene appointment.

The major activity performed by the dental hygienist is to clean your teeth both above the gum line, which is known as scaling, and below the gum line, which is known as root planing. We use both traditional hand scalers and ultrasonic scaling tools (which use super-fast vibrations) to remove deposits depending on your scaling and root planning needs.

As well as cleaning your teeth above and below the gum-line, our Dental team will perform a number of important oral health checks at your hygiene appointment, including:

  • A complete periodontal assessment
  • Checking for any gum recession
  • Checking for the presence of gingivitis
  • Polishing your teeth to remove any surface stain
  • Fluoride treatment (if chosen) to help prevent cavities from forming and harden enamel in areas that may be weak
  • An extra-oral exam at least once a year to check the head, neck and jaw areas for confirmation of health
  • An intra-oral exam to check the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health
  • Digital x-rays (when needed)

You will also have an exam completed by Dr. Richelle Bedier and have a chance to ask any questions you might have.

What is Hygiene Therapy?

Our dental hygiene program follows a strict standard of care to record, assess, and evaluate your oral health condition at every visit. Working with our dedicated dental team, your individual hygiene treatment plan is coordinated to best treat and monitor the health of your teeth and gums. We also reserve your dental hygiene visits in advance to best fit your schedule.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Hygiene Visit?

How often you need to visit North Main Family Dental for a hygiene visit depends on several factors. Are your teeth susceptible to excess accumulation of plaque and calculus? Do you have crowded teeth, fillings or missing teeth? These are all cases that can lead to increased plaque buildup and the possibility of requiring more frequent visits.

Our dental team knows that each patient will require a different dental hygiene schedule. While most people come in for dental hygiene appointments every six months, some people may benefit by coming in every 3-4 months, while others might only require a hygiene appointment every nine or even every 12 months.

The North Main Family Dental treat will be happy to advise you how often you should have a dental cleaning based on your specific individual needs.

Minimizing Sensitivity During Dental Hygiene Treatments

If you have experienced sensitivity in your teeth from past hygiene appointments, taking ibuprofen in advance of your hygiene appointment can help alleviate this. If you are experiencing heightened sensitivity, then dental freezing may also be an option that needs to be discussed to deal with your discomfort issues.
