Dental Crowns

What is a Dental Crown?

Dental Crowns, or “dental caps” as they are commonly referred to, are dental restorations that are used to repair a tooth when a large cavity jeopardizes the health of a tooth, and a filling or another type of dental restoration does not solve the problem. Crowns completely cover or “cap” a damaged or weak tooth or dental implant in order to protect and cover the tooth and restore the size, shape, and strength of the tooth.

Dental Crowns can be made from various materials, including all-ceramic porcelain, Zirconia-based porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, full cast metal, and traditional gold. Based on numerous factors, including esthetics, position within your mouth, dental habits such as teeth grinding, and your personal preference, a full assessment will be completed by Dr. Bedier to determine which material is appropriate for your situation.

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Dental Crowns may be an ideal treatment option when previous fillings are larger than the natural tooth structure. Furthermore, deep fractures may have occurred below the gum line, thus requiring an existing crown to be replaced. Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment or teeth that have recurring tooth decay may also need a Dental Crown. They are also used to improve the appearance of natural teeth that may be malformed, malpositioned or discoloured.

When Might a Dental Crown be recommended?

  • When a previously filled tooth where there now exists more filling than tooth. This results in the existing tooth structure becoming weakened, and the tooth can no longer support the filling.
  • If you have extensive damage, decay or tooth breakage.
  • If you have discoloration and compromised tooth aesthetics.
  • If you have fractures in your tooth.
  • If you have had root canal therapy, your teeth tend to become brittle and are more apt to fracture. These teeth need to be protected and strengthened by a replacement crown.
  • When missing teeth are replaced with a dental bridge, the adjacent teeth require crowns to support the replacement teeth. These Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure while improving the appearance of your teeth.

What is Involved in Getting Fitted for a Dental Crown?

Your tooth will first be prepared; this involves removing tooth decay and shaping the tooth properly. An impression is then obtained of the area to be treated, which is sent to our dental laboratory, where your custom crown is created by a skilled professional lab technician. In the interim, a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect the tooth and your aesthetics. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown will be removed, and your permanent crown will be fitted and adjusted. Finally, we will bond the crown into place, and you will have a new and beautiful-looking tooth!

If you are interested in a long-term, cost-effective, esthetic and durable restoration, a crown may be the best treatment option for you! Call us at (403) 980-0056 to book your Dental Crowns consultation with us today!
