Children’s Dentistry

Early Dental Visits Equal a Lifetime of Dental Health and Wellness!

At North Main Family Dental, we believe that children should begin their dental experience at an early age; this sets them up for a lifetime of good oral care and hygiene. We are proud to follow the recommendation made by the Canadian Dental Association that children have an assessment by a dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, or by one year of age, whichever occurs first.

Children's Dentistry | North Main Family Dental | Family and General Dentist | Airdrie

Tooth decay is considered the single most common chronic childhood disease, and it accounts for hundreds of hours of lost school time. By assessing children every six months to one year, we are able to identify and treat problematic areas in the mouth with procedures such as white fillings to treat existing cavities and fluoride treatments to strengthen the teeth between cleanings. Early dental visits also help us to identify problems that may affect proper nutritional intake due to an improper bite, identify and treat concerns related to speech development, habit control for thumb sucking and other oral habits that may impact the health of the teeth and gums, as well as to diagnose any problems with how the teeth are erupting so a plan for future orthodontic intervention can be considered.

Our team of dental professionals will educate your child in a fun, interactive, and positive manner to emphasize the importance of how proper brushing, flossing, and healthy nutrition impacts their oral health. By following these guidelines, it is our goal to help your child grow up with healthy teeth and gums that will last them a lifetime!

We look forward to hearing from you soon. Call North Main Family Dental at (403) 980-0056 to set up a new Children’s Dentistry appointment today!

Silver Diamond Fluoride for Children

What is Silver Diamond Fluoride?

Silver Diamond Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid consisting of silver, water, fluoride, and ammonia that is used to help prevent tooth cavities from forming, getting larger, or spreading to other teeth. It is applied directly to the surface of your child’s teeth and is commonly used in areas affected by cavities. Applied directly to cavities, it instantly stops the process of tooth decay. Applied to teeth commonly affected by cavities, it can prevent tooth decay from forming at all. Of all treatment options for cavities and tooth decay in toddlers and children, SDF is the least invasive. Research suggests that SDF can be just as helpful when used as a preventative measure as it is for the treatment of existing cavities. SDF has shown to be more successful at reducing cavity growth than the traditional fluoride varnish dentists have used in the past.
